fast illicit substance detection
10 Jun
The Drug Kop is a useful tool for police, school administrators and even parents who want to have a cheap and effective way determine whether a substance contains an illicit drug.
The Drug Kop is designed to pick up all secondary and tertiary amines and the major opiates. These include
· Cocaine
· Heroin
· Methamphetamine
· Ecstasy
· Opium
· Morphine
· Scopolamine
· Diphenhydramine
· LSD (as it contains a secondary amine)
· Many other drugs
A more comprehensive list can be found in the product information insert.
The test consists of a yellow pad on a card together with a cotton swab and wipe. To test whether a powder is or contains an amine or an opiate:
· Wet the swab (the wipe will already be wet)
· Roll it in the powder
· Press it against the pad.
· A bright orange color indicates the presence of one of the drugs as in the attached insert
.
The entire testing process takes just a few seconds.
The Drug Kop will also pick up residue of a drug on a person’s hand.
Note: The test will not tell you which drug is being detected. We can provide specific tests for any particular drug. However, it’s very cheap and it will fit in someone’s pocket. It is the perfect test to determine whether a suspicious substance is an illicit drug. There are no false positives as it only picks up amines or compounds (like heroin) that contain amines.

Technical Insert
The DrugKop is a simple to use colorimetric test developed specially for detecting illicit drugs and some pharmaceuticals quickly and accurately in the field and to aid laboratory analysis.
The colorimetric test detects all illicit substances that are based on chemical amines. Most psychoactive substances are amines while most non-psychoactive drugs and household items are not amines. Therefore it is unlikely that household items found in suspicious circumstances will give a false positive reaction.
Drugs based on amines produce an instant red/pink colour change. If no amine is present the paper will usually turn a white, grey or muddy brown colour. This test has proved to be very sensitive, but since the positive reaction is a red/pink colour, a reasonable level of natural light is preferred when reading the result. Positive results are obvious.
Amphetamines are in a class called a primary amine. Some drugs like Ketamine have a chemical structure known as a secondary amine. Other drugs like cocaine have the structure of a tertiary amine. All classes of amines can be detected by the DrugKop test.
